When the Voluntaire Etranger de la Marine was formed, it was the birth of what we now call the French Foreign Legion, it is interesting to note that the first regiment was made up almost entirely from German settlers living on the American continent. In the beginning there were three regiments formed:
The 1st Regiment was designated lemon yellow turn backs and facings on the uniform jackets,
the 2nd Regiment white and the 3rd regiment had red turn backs and facings. These regiments participated in the battles of New York, Yorktown and German Town. The regiments were issued with the standard French army weapons and equipment.
