History:
In 1775 the colonies of New England decided to organize an army. Rhode Island elected 2 Regiments Conneticut 5 but the most regiments 16 in all came from Massachusetts. The idea was to form an army no less than 20.000 men strong divided into 27 battalions. Washington failed in trying to have the commanders from other colonies and the battalions received numbers instead of the usual practice of naming them after the commanders or the state or colony from which they were formed. From the 1775 formed Gerrish/Baldwins Massachusetts regiment came in 1775 the 26th Regiment of the Continental Army. One year later it was to be called the 9th Massachusetts.
