The word Landsknecht evolved around 1470. Peter von Hagenbach gave this name to the troops which he sent to the aid of Charles the bold of Burgundy. The word Landsknecht means, serving your country. In the 15th century these same soldiers were called Piqueniers relating to their main weapon, the pike or lance. Characteristic for the Landsknechts was their colourful and gaudy clothing.
